At Maras Salinas, subterranean saline water bleeds from the earth and is diverted into more than 3,000 solar evaporation pools, hand-dug by ancient peoples and passed down through generations. The sun evaporates the water, leaving behind salt that locals harvest. This salt serves as both a vital seasoning and the lifeblood of the local economy. Here, salt carries both literal and metaphorical significance, embodying the expressions "the salt of the earth" and "back to work at the salt mines."
