Amanda Dumas-Hernandez is a conceptually driven interdisciplinary artist and designer whose practice spans sculpture, painting, installation, digital imaging, and surface design. Her work explores the intersection of material, concept, and visual culture through a multidisciplinary approach developed over more than three decades of professional creative practice.
Dumas-Hernandez earned an MFA from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), and studied at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste München in Germany. While in Germany, she was awarded an artist residency at Eisch Glashütte in 1999.
Her artwork has been exhibited internationally and featured in publications throughout North America, Europe, and Australia. Her work has been reviewed in Sculpture Magazine and The Sydney Morning Herald, and she has been interviewed by BBC Radio. Images of her work have appeared in The Sun (UK) and on British television, while one of her sculptures was featured on the cover of the French international news magazine Courrier International. She has presented lectures and keynote addresses at institutions including the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery, and the High Museum of Art in Atlanta.
Before transitioning fully into academia and studio practice, Dumas-Hernandez began her career in graphic design after earning an Associate of Arts degree from the Art Institute of Atlanta. She worked as a graphic designer, illustrator, and multimedia design specialist for NCR Corporation during the formative years of computer interface design. Between 1990 and 2003, she developed graphics for NCR software interfaces, including an icon library of more than 300 icons used by clients such as Pizza Hut, The Home Depot, and Delta Air Lines. At age twenty-two, she designed the registered trademark logo for NCR's NICE (Natural Interface for Controlled Environments) product.
Dumas-Hernandez has almost twenty years of collegiate teaching experience in art and design, including thirteen years as Professor of Foundation Studies at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). During her tenure, she collaborated with the Children's Museum of Atlanta on exhibitions and educational programming from 2008 to 2019. She also served as a committee chair for four years and was awarded a competitive faculty sabbatical grant.
After leaving SCAD to devote more time to her family, Dumas-Hernandez has remained active as both an artist and designer while serving her community through nonprofit organizations and civic boards and committees. Her current creative venture is Casa Dumas-Hernandez,
a lifestyle brand featuring original wallpaper and textile designs custom manufactured through Spoonflower.
